Home Ventilation
Home Ventilation Systems in Somerset
Somerset is a county with a distinctive character — rolling hills, river valleys, a high water table across the Levels, and a significant proportion of older housing stock. It’s also a county where damp and condensation are genuinely common household problems, not just occasional inconveniences.
Older properties in particular were built at a time when draughts did the job of ventilation naturally. Modern draught-proofing and double glazing, while excellent for energy efficiency, have closed off those natural air pathways. The result is that moisture produced by everyday living — cooking, showering, breathing — has nowhere to go, and it accumulates within the fabric of the home.
A Positive Input Ventilation (PIV) system addresses this directly and permanently. It’s one of the most cost-effective home improvements homeowner can make, and it’s something we install regularly.

Positive Input Ventilation by Nuaire
We install Positive Input Ventilation systems exclusively from Nuaire, who are widely regarded as the UK’s leading manufacturer in this space. Their systems are specified and installed across thousands of UK homes each year, and their track record for reliability and effectiveness is exceptional.
Here’s how a Nuaire PIV system works in practice. A compact unit is installed in the loft space — out of sight and out of the way. It draws fresh air in from outside, passes it through a filter that removes airborne pollutants, dust particles and pathogens, and then gently pushes that clean, filtered air into the living areas of the home via a ceiling-mounted diffuser.
As this continuous supply of fresh air enters the property, it creates a slight positive pressure throughout the home. This gentle pressurisation pushes stale, humid air outward through natural gaps in the building fabric — extracting moisture, allergens, cooking odours, and pollutants in the process.
The key benefits are:
The Benefits at a Glance
Reduced Humidity & Condensation
By continuously introducing drier, filtered air and expelling moisture-laden air, PIV systems maintain healthier humidity levels throughout the home — making condensation and mould significantly less likely to recur.
Better Health for Your Household
Cleaner indoor air reduces exposure to allergens, mould spores and airborne pollutants. For households with young children, elderly residents, or anyone with a respiratory condition, the health benefits can be substantial.
Lower Heating Bills Over Time
A damp home is a cold home — moisture in walls and ceilings acts as a thermal barrier that makes your heating system work harder. A drier home retains heat more effectively and your energy bills reflect that.

FAQs
In most cases, yes. Mould in the home is almost always caused by excess moisture, and a PIV system removes the conditions that allow it to develop. Where mould is caused by structural water ingress rather than condensation, that underlying issue would need to be addressed separately — but our engineer will flag this during the site survey if relevant.
Very quiet. The unit sits in the loft and operates continuously at a low speed. In normal circumstances you won’t hear it from the rooms below. Some customers describe a very faint background hum if they stand directly beneath the diffuser in a completely quiet room — but in everyday living conditions, it’s effectively silent.
This is a common concern, and the answer is no. Nuaire PIV units are designed to draw air from the loft void, where the temperature is naturally higher than outside. Many models also include a heating element that gently warms the incoming air during colder months. The overall effect on your home’s temperature is negligible.
